We have all seen typical pictures of people affected by TB: poor, emaciated, weak, and dying individuals. These photos show the brutal truth of the disease for many patients. But the fight against TB doesn’t always look like that. Each photo on this website has significance to a story, and is used to show that the TB epidemic is fought by many different people in many different places. As we explain in our about section, the Human Spirit Project is a collection of individual stories showing everyday people fighting the TB epidemic. The fight to overcome TB looks very different than the outcome of a failed system, which is what typical photos of the TB epidemic depict, and includes people from all across the global spectrum – from high-level decision makers, to researchers, to clinic managers, to patients.
This project isn’t so much about tuberculosis as a disease, rather it is about the people behind the epidemic. Not everybody working in TB is a patient, and not every patient is sick and dying.
